A lot of times I see the terms 3D virtual tour and 360° virtual tour used in the totally same meaning. And don’t get me wrong, they have a lot in common, but they are not the same. And in the short article, I do my best to explain the difference.
Let’s start with the obvious. What is a virtual tour? A virtual tour is a digital experience that lets the user explore an environment digitally. Most of the time, the user has the opportunity to explore every detail of the space in any direction (aka can turn to left, right, top, or bottom).

An easy example is a virtual tour of a real estate property. The owner creates a virtual tour so that the potential buyers can see the house inside and explore it before traveling and scheduling a physical tour.
But what type of virtual tour is it?
Is it a 3D virtual tour or a 360° virtual tour?
Let’s figure it out.
A 360° virtual tour is created out of 360° photos or 360° videos and can showcase the entire space from one specific point.
A 3D virtual tour is created from 3D models, so the virtual tour is created by scanning the space or by developing a 3D model in specific software.
