A 3D configurator is an application that can show an object in a 3rd dimension – mostly as a web-based or VR-based digital experience which lets users interact with the 3D model of the object (product).
A commercial 3D configurator is mostly used to show customers the company’s product in a 3D view and let the user choose what color, size, materials, and other modifications they want. And after choosing the specific configuration the user chooses, the 3D model can be seen. So, this way the customer can exactly see what their configuration actually looks like.
This technology is super popular right now because it lets B2B companies showcase their complicated product in a unique way and let the user choose the configuration according to their preferences without the need to call a salesperson. Now it is also much easier to create super realistic 3D models with the upcoming technology of photogrammetry, 3D scanners, or even Gaussian splatting.
